Just Not Now

Lolo Jones, an Olympic hurdler who is 29 years old has confessed to being a virgin. I guess I am writing this blog on this subject because I am amazed that the choice for “abstinence” until married has become known as an alternate lifestyle… an alternate lifestyle?

I like her attitude.  She said she was tired of answering the question, “Why are you still single?”  So she finally told the media she is saving herself for marriage.  She stated in a recent interview that remaining a virgin has been harder than training to become an Olympian.  However, she also said that her focus on being an Olympian has helped because of the discipline it has taught her.

She has a motto that can be shared with young women today who are finding it difficult to remain pure before marriage.  She believes the old motto of “Just say no” is not correct.  She says, “Just not now”.

“For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife; and they shall become one flesh.” (Genesis 2:24)

Memorial Day

Memorial Day has a special meaning to me because my family is steeped in military service.  My Grandfather served in WWI, my Dad served as a Marine in WWII, my Uncle served under General Patton in WWII and died from complications after stepping on a land mine, my father-in-law served in the Korean Conflict, my Cousin served in Vietnam, my brother-in-law served in the Army during that same time, and my Nephew served in the Marines and was a part of the initial envoy during the “Shock and Awe” attack that brought down Saddam Hussein.

It is a challenge to love someone who believes they have a call to duty.  However, it is an honor as well.  We want to protect those we love but when they believe their job is to place themselves in danger, then prayer is our only recourse.  That is why I am truly honored and humbled this Memorial Day.  I will be offering the benediction at a Memorial Day Ceremony and I know the audience will be filled with those that have lost their loved ones.

I will start out with a scripture that sums it up best in my opinion, “Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends.”  (John 15:13)

3 Training Requirements

Alex Morgan, a member of the U.S. National Soccer Team who is heading to the 2012 Olympics, gave 3 requirements for training like an Olympian.  In a recent interview, she stated that diet, motivation, and exercise are essential when training.

I find it interesting that even back in the days when Paul was writing certain portions of the Bible, he referenced sporting events as an example as to how we should conduct ourselves as Christians.  Here are 3 scriptures to support my point:

“Also if anyone competes as an athlete, he does not win the prize unless he competes according to the rules.” (2Timothy 2:5)

“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith;” (2Timothy 4:7)

“Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but only one receives the prize?  Run in such a way that you may win.” (1Cornithians 9:24)

Paul had a great understanding of the correlation between what it takes to keep our physical bodies in shape and what it takes to keep our spiritual life intact.  If Paul were alive today, I could see him being a huge fan of the Olympic games, the Dodgers…and maybe even the Angels.

7 Wonders

The “New 7 Wonders of the World” may not be in the current headlines.  However, I do find it interesting that the 7th Wonder on this prestigious list is a statue of Jesus standing with outstretched hands on top of Corcovado Mountain, keeping watch over the city of Rio de Janeiro. It took nine years to bring this vision to fruition and now it serves as a symbol of worldwide peace.

What is newsworthy is the fact that globally Christianity is being challenged and in some countries, including the U.S.A., symbols that represent Christianity are being removed from the public view under the guise of religious freedom.   This makes me wonder what the future holds for the world’s largest art-deco statue.

However, there is a true “Wonder” that never made it to the list.  The “Wonder” of how the King of Kings gives up His throne in order to sacrificially serve you and me to the point of death.  Which leads to the next “Wonder” of Jesus resurrecting, appearing to over 500 witnesses, and then ascending back to heaven and taking His place at the right hand of God.  Taking us now to my third “Wonder” over the fact that He cares about each of the over 7 billion people on this planet so much that He even knows how many hairs are on each of our heads.  Now those are “Wonders”.

Every Hour of Every Day

In keeping with the theme of “prayer” from last Friday’s blog, I found a news article about a church in Oklahoma that has attempted to keep a prayer vigil going every hour of every day, 24/7, since 2003.  The chapel at St. Joseph’s Church in the city of Norman has designated this feat as “Perpetual Adoration”.

Once again, referring to last Friday’s blog entitled “Leaving California and Heading to Colorado”, the courts may have the power to remove the National Day of Prayer throughout this great nation, but it will not stop the people from praying.  In fact, it may cause the follower’s of Christ to enter into a deeper and more meaningful prayer life.  Of course I believe it would be detrimental to the psyche of our great nation if the National Day of Prayer was removed, but I do not believe that an act like that would hinder the prayers being offered from the people of this great nation.

Luke chapter 19, verses 39 – 40 read, “Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Him, ‘Teacher, rebuke Your disciples.’  But Jesus answered, ‘I tell you, if these become silent, the stones will cry out!’”

Leaving California and Heading To Colorado

I don’t know if any of you remember this, but in the early 1990’s there was a movement of Christian organizations leaving California and heading to Colorado.  I was a little concerned at the time for two main reasons.  The first reason for my concern was the uncertainty this would create in California.  With some of the most prolific Christian organizations exiting the west, I could not help but wonder how that would affect our future here in the Golden State.  I think we know the outcome at this point.

My second concern was for the State of Colorado.  With such an influx of biblical based organizations entering their beautiful countryside, I had a feeling that a battle was about to develop.  I have read over the years some of the court cases that I believe were the result of those battles.  But it was not until I read this recent article that I realized the battle ground has truly developed. The article read:

“A Colorado court has ruled the state’s proclamation for a Day of Prayer is unconstitutional.”

Congress designated “The National Day of Prayer” to be held each year on the first Thursday of May.  However, back in 2008, an organization known as Freedom From Religion filed in the Colorado courts that this was unconstitutional.  In 2011 they lost their case but they fought the verdict and had it end up in the Colorado Court of Appeals where the latest decision was recently announced. In Ephesians Chapter 6, Verse 18, we find God has something to say on the topic of prayer:

“With all prayer and petition pray at all times in the Spirit, and with this in view, be on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saints,”

Sylvania Welcomes You

I have to be honest, when I read the sign “Sylvania Welcomes You”; I had doubts about the scripture they posted directly underneath.  It seems this little town known, as Sylvania, Alabama believes Ephesians Chapter 4, Verse 5 reflects the town sentiment.  The scripture reads, “One Lord, one faith, one baptism.”  My first thought was they must have summarized the true scripture, that is too simplified…wrong.

That is exactly the way the scripture reads when I researched it from a New American Standard Bible.  Don’t you just love the way the Lord keeps things easy for us to understand?  So often we try to complicate the simple message of salvation.  We try to make it a journey of acts, works and goals.  When in reality, it is a message of grace.

Acts, works and goals are good, but not if we are attempting to use them as a means to earn our way into the hands of grace…God’s gift of grace is free.  We don’t have to complicate it.  We just need to accept it for its true meaning.  Thank you Sylvania, Alabama and thank you Acting Mayor Max Turner for the reminder.

200-Foot Cross

Branson Missouri has been selected to become the recipient of a 200-foot cross.  The developer, Kerry Brown, said he hopes the cross will become a national icon in the likes of the Statue of Liberty and the Golden Gate Bridge.  The funds to build the cross will primarily come from donations, with the idea that the cross will always be free to visitors and anyone can come and worship at any time.

As soon as Mr. Brown received the zoning approval, the fund raising campaign began.  Brown is hoping to raise $5 million and have the project completed by the end of 2013.  He also stated that he has had very little opposition to his project but believes that will change as the money continues to come in and the time draws closer to completion.

The motivating factor behind this project stems back to Kerry Brown’s father having a dream.  His father’s vision came to him twenty years ago to build a 7-foot cross at this location.  Brown says once he caught the vision, he saw it as his mission to erect the largest cross anyone has ever seen.

With Mr. Brown having a legal background, I’m certain he is keenly aware of the challenges he will soon be facing.  My unsolicited advice to him comes from Proverbs Chapter 16, Verse 9, “The mind of man plans his way, but the Lord directs is steps.”

Why Did I Write A Book: The Anne M. Baxter Interview

At the request of some dear friends that don’t do Facebook….what…there are people that don’t do FB?  It’s true…anyway…at the request of some dear friends that don’t do Facebook, I have re-posted Wednesday’s interview with American Christian Fiction Writer’s Nothern Coordinator Anne M. Baxter.  To God goes the glory:

Anne: It’s my pleasure to introduce to you today a new friend, Rick Mayhew, author of Donovan’s Law, a futuristic view of what could happen if “the end” were any closer.  Hi, Rick, nice to have you onboard today. I’m in the process of reading your book, Donovan’s Law, and I’m curious what made you think about writing. Can you tell us a little about it?

Rick: It was January 2007, and we as a nation had just said our goodbyes to old Mr. 2006. Like most of you I had high hopes of what a fresh start with the New Year would bring to my family and I. It was late one evening, and I had just finished a chapter from one of the many Christian fiction books that I read over the years. I closed the book, laid my head down next to my wife, and tried to go to sleep. Being a hopeless insomniac back then, my mind began to wander. I was rehashing the storyline I had just finished reading, thinking how I would have written it slightly different than the author. That’s when it happened. Something spoke in my heart and said, “You should write a book.” I thought about it for the briefest of seconds, and then laughed at my naiveté. “How could I write a book? I have never taken a class or even read an article about what it takes to write a book.” I rolled over, closed my eyes, and repeated to myself out of disgust, “Write a book. That’s silly.”

Anne: Hm. So you totally put it out of your head. Went to sleep after telling yourself, “That’s silly.” And yet, something must have inspired you to keep going.

Rick: The next evening I remember going through the same routine. I was once again laying my head next to my wife in a futile attempt to sleep. I began thinking, “What am I going to do? I can’t sleep, and I have to work in the morning. I need to sleep.” But the harder I tried to convince myself to sleep, the more awake I became. Then I felt that gentle nudge again, “Write a book.” Out of shear frustration, I rose from my bed and went into my office and sat at my desk. I gazed over the computer screen and said, “Okay, what do I write about?” Then it came to me. Write about something you know. Write about a firefighter who can’t sleep. And so the first page of my book, Donovan’s Law, begins with a firefighter on duty at the fire station and his attempt to sleep. The book was born.

Anne: Yes, yes, and then what?

Rick: For the next year, I placed on paper the events of the book as they unfolded within my mind. I wrote the book as though I was watching a movie. I did not know what the storyline was going to be or who or what the characters were going to do until I would sit down each night and begin their journey. Ultimately when I finished, I had 235 pages lying on my desk beckoning me, “Now what do we do?” Once again, I had no contacts or experience in getting a book published so I prayed for guidance.

Anne: What did you get in the way of guidance?

Rick: I decided to e-mail Focus on the Family because I had been a supporter of their ministry for years. I asked them for advice as to how one would go about getting published and if they would be interested in reviewing my manuscript. I received a very polite e-mail saying they did not publish fiction novels for now, but thanked me for considering them. Well, I figured that must be my answer. So I placed the novel on a shelf and walked away for three months.

Anne: Three months! Wow, how could you stand it?

Rick: Not well, I’m afraid. Night after night, I kept getting the urge to pursue this endeavor. I soon came to realize I could not give up so easily. Finally, I decided to e-mail them again. This time I received an answer suggesting I submit to a website known as Writer’s Edge. It turned out that Writer’s Edge is a company that looks over new author manuscripts and decides if there is a chance for publishing. If they give a writer the nod, then they will post your manuscript along with hundreds of others on their site. Publishers looking for something new and different visit this site.

Anne: I’ve heard a little about Writer’s Edge. What happened then?

Rick: I was only posted for about three weeks when I received an e-mail from what is now known as OakTara Publishing. The publishing agent asked if I had signed a contract yet with any publisher. When I told them “no” he said my manuscript was exactly the type of book they were looking for in a new author. Donovan’s Law, a futuristic thriller based on today’s headlines, was published in August of 2011 and is now available in paperback and e-versions through Amazon.com, Christianbook.com, and any Christian bookstore that carries Lifeway Christian Store products. In addition, OakTara Publishers stated they would be interested in a sequel. God is truly amazing!

It’s A God Thing: An Interview With Anne M. Baxter

It was an honor to be interviewed by Anne M. Baxter, the Northern California Coordinator for American Christian Fiction Writers (ACFW).  ACFW is known as “The Voice of Christian Fiction”.  So when we made contact a few weeks ago and we began discussing the chance that she would like to interview me about Donovan’s Law, I felt so blessed. In addition to the interview, which she will be posting on Facebook today,  Anne will be publishing her review of Donovan’s Law on her website tomorrow, Thursday May 10th.  Here is a little bit about the organization Anne M. Baxter represents:

ACFW has a “…mission is to promote Christian Fiction through developing the skills of its authors, educating them in the market, and serving as an advocate in the traditional publishing industry.” For more information about American Christian Fiction Writers, please visit their website located at the bottom of this blog.

Now I would like to take a moment and give a heartfelt “Thank You” to Anne M. Baxter.  By the way Anne, I hope you like the book (I’m finding it hard to type with my fingers crossed)…or this could be very embarrassing.
