Top 7 Presidential Issues

With the Presidential Election tomorrow, November 6th, let me be the first to say to you this morning, “Get out and vote.”  American men and woman have made great sacrifices in order to secure this inalienable right.  Do not take this privilege for granted.  Secondly, if you are still not certain who to vote for, here is a breakdown of the top 7 issues I believe the majority of Americans are interested in knowing:

Romney:

  • Economy: Romney believes in the principle of cutting taxes to bring economic growth.
  • Foreign Affairs: He believes the top two issues are defeating the “Jihadists” and staying competitive with Asia.
  • Healthcare: Healthcare is a very tricky and awkward issue for Romney.  He has repeatedly declared he would immediately dismantle Obama’s Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 (Obama-Care).  Yet, Romney’s own health care legislation in Massachusetts is considered to be the foundation for Obama’s health-care plan.
  • Education: Romney believes that education is a central aspect of the American Dream.  He advocates wide-ranging reforms to the education system, including tying teachers’ compensations to their results instead of tenure.
  • Gun Control: He is in favor of the Second Amendment and the right to bear arms.
  • Same Sex Marriage:  He has wavered back and forth with this issue and I am not very clear as to where he stands today.
  • Abortion: Against abortion.

Obama:

  • Economy: He is in favor of a tax code, which would involve raising the tax rates for the high income category proportionately and increasing the tax cuts and credits of the middle and low income stratum.
  • Foreign Affairs: Mixed message due to his statement to renew the military yet he has been in office for four years.   Believes we need to confront the building up and stock piling of nuclear arsenals.
  • Healthcare: The “Obama-care” Act was passed with the intention to expand health coverage to 32 million uninsured Americans.
  • Education: No solid plan that I could find but here is a statement he made, “reward good teachers and stop making excuses for bad ones.”
  • Gun Control: Obama agrees to an individual’s right to bear arms in principle, but does not take it as an absolute right and considers it as a negotiable subject.
  • Same Sex Marriage: President Obama publicly announced his endorsement of same-sex marriage.
  • Abortion:  In favor of abortion.

How To Stay Married For 7 Decades

Photo By Alex C. Hicks Jr.

This October, my wife and I will be celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary.  We began dating in high school and stayed together for five years before we married.  That means we have been together for 35 years.  Seems pretty amazing …not that we have been together for 35 years, but the fact that someone could put up with me for that length of time.

Then I read the article listed below about Mattie Belle and J.W. Duncan who would consider the length of time my wife and I have been together as “only the beginning”.   The article says they have been married for 72 years…yikes!  Here is what they say is the secret to their success:

“When asked what has kept them together for more than seven decades, J.W. said it’s a combination of love and faith. ‘If you pray together, you stay together. Our faith has kept us together,’ he said. ‘We believe in the Bible, taking nothing from it and adding nothing to it.’”

7 Deadly Sins

Although the so called “7 Deadly Sins” cannot be found in Proverbs or Galatians as it is so often professed, I believe the majority of us would agree that the practice of any of these sins would result in a miserable life, not to mention a possible eternal separation from God.  Let’s remember the word “gluttony” for the purpose of this blog.  The 7 Deadly Sins include:

Wrath, greed, sloth, pride, lust, envy, and gluttony.

“A 2006 Purdue study found that the fundamental Christians are by far the heaviest of all religious groups led by the Baptists with a 30% obesity rate…Similarly, a 2011 Northwestern University study tracking 3,433 men and women for 18 years found that young adults who attend church or a Bible study once a week are 50% more likely to be obese.”

This is a stumper for me.  I have no idea why Christians would be leading the religious population in obesity.  I know the Center for Disease Control (CDC) has listed one of the most dangerous concerns for a visitor entering the U.S. is obesity.  But why are Christians leading all religions in obesity?  Don’t get me wrong, I have had my battle with my weight off and on over the years so this is not a finger pointing article.  My issue is the fact that these statistics truly have me baffled.  If you have any thoughts on this matter, I would like to hear from you.  You can e-mail me at rickmayhew@hotmail.com.

7 Wonders

The “New 7 Wonders of the World” may not be in the current headlines.  However, I do find it interesting that the 7th Wonder on this prestigious list is a statue of Jesus standing with outstretched hands on top of Corcovado Mountain, keeping watch over the city of Rio de Janeiro. It took nine years to bring this vision to fruition and now it serves as a symbol of worldwide peace.

What is newsworthy is the fact that globally Christianity is being challenged and in some countries, including the U.S.A., symbols that represent Christianity are being removed from the public view under the guise of religious freedom.   This makes me wonder what the future holds for the world’s largest art-deco statue.

However, there is a true “Wonder” that never made it to the list.  The “Wonder” of how the King of Kings gives up His throne in order to sacrificially serve you and me to the point of death.  Which leads to the next “Wonder” of Jesus resurrecting, appearing to over 500 witnesses, and then ascending back to heaven and taking His place at the right hand of God.  Taking us now to my third “Wonder” over the fact that He cares about each of the over 7 billion people on this planet so much that He even knows how many hairs are on each of our heads.  Now those are “Wonders”.

  1.      The Great Wall of China
  2.      The Machu Picchu Ruins, South America
  3.      Petra, Southern Jordan
  4.      Old World Colosseum, Italy
  5.      Taj Mahal, India
  6.      Mayan Ruins, Yucatan Peninsula Mexico
  7.      Christ the Redeemer, Rio de Janeiro
