Contemplate, Deliberate, and Meditate: Part 4

“We forget that God has not distributed His gifts with absolute equity.  Does that seem unfair?  No, He will judge in fairness.  Everyone is accountable for the resources he or she has been entrusted with.  No more, no less.  The distribution is determined by the wisdom of God.” – Chris Tiegreen

 Actions Speak Louder Than Words

In 1946 while on a train to the mountain town of Darjeeling, Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu a.k.a. Mother Teresa, was recovering from tuberculosis.  At some point during that train ride, Mother Teresa receives a calling from God “to serve him among the poorest of the poor”…and the rest is history.

In the 1940’s while at Forest Home Christian Camp in Big Bear, California, William Franklin Graham Jr. a.k.a. Billy Graham, recognized the Bible as the “Perfect Word of God”…and the rest is history.

Billy Graham Hospitalized

I know the blog information today is a few days old, however, based on everything this man has done, I believe we should be keeping him in our prayers this week.

The world renowned Christian evangelist, Billy Graham, was hospitalized over the weekend with possible bronchitis.  The doctors indicate the 93-year-old man of God is responding well to the medication, but coming from someone who has had bronchitis, I’m certain he is still struggling.

Through the Billy Graham Evangelical Association, Billy has organized and conducted more than 400 crusades in 185 countries and territories on six continents. It is quite possible that the Reverend may have personally preached the Gospel of Jesus Christ to more people than any other person in history.

From a personal perspective, in 2004, my wife and I participated in a Billy Graham Crusade at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.  The thing that stood out the most to me was the fact that Billy did not preach for hours on end.  Instead, he spoke for about 20 minutes with the basic gospel message of salvation through Jesus Christ and then gave the alter call.  At that point, the stadium seats began to empty as hundreds of people made their way on to the football field in their first step leading them into a relationship with Jesus Christ.

The lesson I learned?  Keep it simple, present the truth, and let God’s Holy Spirit do the rest.  Let’s pray for Mr. Graham’s health and comfort.  After all, I’m certain he has prayed for you…

Rick Warren Hosts Presidential Forum

ivarfjeld.wordpress.com

Some of you may remember when Pastor Rick Warren hosted a “Presidential Forum” for the 2008 Presidential candidates. He will be conducting the same type of interview process once again this month.  Tentatively, the dates for the forum will be sometime during the week of August 20th.

This time the panel will include Mitt Romney and Barack Obama.  When the Pastor was asked to explain the purpose for hosting such an event, Pastor Warren responded, “To promote social civility so that people with major disagreements can talk without beating each other up.”

The format will be similar to the 2008 forum when Pastor Warren would interview one candidate while the other candidate remained off camera, off site, and out of earshot.  Then the pastor would have the candidate he just interviewed enter into isolation while providing the rival candidate his opportunity at center stage.

I believe Pastor Warren needs to walk carefully as he dabbles in this political arena.  There is a story about Billy and Ruth Graham that I enjoy retelling:

The Grahams were attending a formal dinner at the White House one year when Billy was asked a question that would have clearly landed him as a Republican or Democrat. The story goes that before he could respond, Ruth kicked him under the table.  The maneuver achieved its objective by distracting Billy from answering the question. During the drive home, Billy asked his wife why she kicked him.  Ruth responded to the effect that God has a bigger plan for Billy than politics.  By publicly choosing one side over the other, Billy would have risked isolating the love of Jesus towards half of the nation.

Sound words of advice from a wise woman…

Social Media Is Dangerous?

For those of you who are convinced that the social media is dangerous and has nothing healthy to offer, it looks like the Billy Graham Evangelical Association (BGEA) is about to make a run at changing that stigma.  For over the past several months, the BGEA has been beta testing a website that offers salvation to those interested in changing their lives.  The website is based on John 3:16, which reads:

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have ever lasting life.”

So far the website indicates that over 476,000 people have accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior since the trial basis began last year.  In true Billy Graham spirit, the website does not leave a new believer on their own after they make a decision for Christ.  Once the person chooses to believe in the Son of God, they have the option to sign up for a five week training session.  Then at the conclusion of the training, the website will attempt to find a church in a local community for that person to start attending.
