Feel Good Friday: Happy Mother’s Day

Happy Mother's Day

This Sunday is Mother’s Day and traditionally Mother’s Day is a celebration honoring mothers and motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society.  When my Mom was still alive I used to show my appreciation to her with a card, a gift, a bouquet of flowers, or a restaurant brunch.

When our children were little we tried serving my wife breakfast in bed for the first few years but the burnt toast and over cooked eggs proved to be too much of a love gesture for her.  So we resorted to the ways listed above to show her how much we appreciated her sacrifice and love.

Now I get to see how my grandchildren show their Mommy how much they appreciate her.   You know what I have discovered?  No matter how fancy our toasters become, the smell of burnt toast doesn’t seem to change.

Enjoy Your Mother’s Day :)

Pray for the Warren Family

Pray for the Warren Family

I know most of you heard the tragic news about the 27-year-old son of popular evangelical pastor Rick Warren.  If you have not, then you should know his son passed away at his Southern California home this past Friday evening.  Pastor Warren remarked about his son Matthew, “He had a brilliant intellect and a gift for sensing who was most in pain or most uncomfortable in a room. He’d then make a bee-line to that person to engage and encourage them.”

I share this news because my heart truly weeps for parents who lose their children.  Rick and his wife Kay are going to need our prayers long after the memorial service, so please join me in adding them to your prayer list.

Out of the Mouths of Babes

Out of the Mouths of Babes-Scott Liddell

My daughter and son-in-law have decided to home-school their children for now.  Last Monday my daughter gave my five (5) year-old grand-daughter her writing assignment.  It was Martin Luther King Jr. Day so my daughter explained to her why our country was celebrating and what the man had accomplished.  Here is the final paper my grand-daughter wrote on the computer:

“you should not judge people by the color of their skin.  it is very rude and disrespectful.  also it will hurt that person’s feelings.  it doesn’t matter what color is on your skin because it does not have anything to do with the way the brain is or how people act.  instead you should watch how people are to other people.  that will tell you more than skin will.”

From the mouth of a five (5) year-old to the ears of the world…

A Christmas Poem

I lay at rest in a peaceful state,

Tomorrow is Christmas and the children can’t wait.

The weather outside is crispy and clear,

The glow from the fireplace reflects in the mirror.

My eyes become heavy and my thoughts start to fade,

But not before visions of my family invade.

Then a slight tap…tap…tap begins soft in my head,

It grows with intensity ‘til I rise from my bed.

I look to the window where the noise is abound,

In my grogginess and haste I step on the hound.

As I spy through the window the tap-tap fades away,

I’m staring at nothing and I like it that way.

Than a humorous thought comes to me from the past,

‘Twas the Night Before Christmas it’s happening at last.

A slight chuckle slips out as I turn toward the bed,

The tap-tap starts again and it’s not in my head.

This time as I squint to see what is the cause,

I witness a sight but it’s not Santa Claus.

The stars have aligned to a wonderful scene,

A manger, a mother, a baby…a dream.

I blink my eyes twice and rub out all the sleep,

I look once again and the scene is more deep.

The wise men, the animals, and even the bright star,

Have formed once again in the distance afar.

Now a message appears as the stars realign,

God’s written word, what a wonderful sign.

This is My Son Whom I love and adore,

His birth was My gift to the rich and the poor.

So don’t lose your focus on this Christmas day,

Remember your Savior and what He had to say.

There’s no greater gift from one friend to another,

Than to lay down his life in place of the other.

Then as fast as it came it faded away,

My nose pressed the window in hopes it would stay.

I made my way back to the bed in a fog,

This time I made sure I stepped over the dog.

Then I sat very still my gaze circled the house,

Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.

I Believe

I believe the loudest sound after the Newtown, Connecticut tragedy was the sound of God’s heart breaking.

I believe the deepest reaction after the Newtown, Connecticut tragedy were the tears that flowed from the eyes of Jesus.

I believe 1 John 4:4, “You are from God, little children, and have overcome them; because greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world.”

I believe in miracles.

…and I believe God’s Holy Spirit will touch the hearts of those in need, individually, and precisely in the fashion needed.

Battlefield: Missouri

The State of Missouri has certainly stepped into the “battlefield” so to speak.  Last month, a law which the citizens voted into place went into effect.  It is a law to ensure that a “worship” service cannot be interrupted.   The ACLU has taken offense to this law and is now challenging its content.  Next, the people are seeking an amendment to the state constitution that would include school children being allowed to voluntarily pray to God if they chose to do so.  Here are highlights from both issues:

With the first issue, the law now makes it a misdemeanor to intentionally disturb or interrupt a “house of worship” with profane language, rude or indecent behavior or noise that breaks the solemnity of the service.

In the second issue, the Missouri Constitution would be amended to ensure that the right of Missouri citizens to express their religious beliefs should not be infringed upon.  Along with school children having the right to pray and acknowledge God voluntarily in their schools. Finally,  all public schools shall display the Bill of Rights of the United States Constitution.

Below is the first amendment to the Bill of Rights:

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

1 Way To Celebrate Mediocrity

It amazes me how we continue to invent ways to celebrate mediocrity and then wonder why we are struggling to compete on a global basis.  Below is an excerpt from the news article that created my cause for concern:

“Dustin Do, 16, scored the 2012 BMW 128 Coupe, but it was his parents who were feeling lucky:  They get to drive the $36,000 car until their son comes of age.  Dustin, a sophomore at Sam Houston High School in Arlington, was one of 10 local students randomly selected from a pool of students who didn’t miss a day of school for the last six weeks.”

Not missing a day of school for six weeks earns this student a brand new BMW?  I truly hope this is a misprint.  Not missing school for six years may be something to celebrate but not six weeks.  If we continue to lower the bar of the exceptional then for the first time in our society we will no longer strive for excellence because we will have truly lost sight of the meaning.

According to the Encarta Dictionary, the word “excellence” is defined as “The quality or state of being outstanding and superior.”  With this definition in mind, here is what the Bible has to say in Philippians Chapter 4, Verse 8:

“Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things.”

For what it is worth, I am proud of Dustin for not missing school for six weeks…but a new BMW?

Cyber-Bullying

Cyber-bullying was a non-existent term just a few short years ago.  We are now fully aware that not only does this term exist, but also it is having devastating consequences on people throughout the world…especially our children. The suicide of a 10-year-old girl was reported on the news just this past Friday. It was stated that the reason behind the suicide was three years of being bullied by her classmates and especially the cyber-bullying that had taking place in recent months.

I’m fairly certain that children picking on and bullying each other has been occurring for thousands of years.  I do not know of one person who has not been the victim of mean behavior at some point in time during their childhood, either at school or during some after school activity.  However, something is different today.  Cyber-bullying seems to penetrate deeper into our psyche more than the character attacks of the past.  Allow me to offer my amateur explanation for at least one reason why this may be the case.

A close friend of mine recently told me that people say things in a text message or email that they would not necessarily say face to face.  As I contemplated that statement, I began to realize how powerful e-mails and texting can be.  I wrote a blog back in October of this year about the tongue and how damaging it can be to others if we do not think before we speak.  The written word is just an extension of that fact.

Now combine the “say whatever you want” attitude over the internet with the group mentality that can be generated in all of us, plus the immaturity of childhood and we have an explosive time bomb on our hands.  Worse yet, I do not see a solution coming down the road any time soon.  So may I offer this unsolicited piece of advice to myself as well as to the rest of the world?  Parents, train-up your children in the way they should go.  If not us…who?

All Hallow’s Eve

Halloween was not always the costume-wearing candy-gathering event it has evolved into with today’s society.  In fact, the evil folklore that most people accustom this occasion with is something that came along much later after its inception.

The history of Halloween typically links it to a Celtic festival kept by the Gaels and Celts in the British Isles.   It was a celebration of the summer’s end. If you believe this to be the true history, then there is no evidence that it was connected with the dead in pre-Christian times, or that pagan religious ceremonies were held.  However, that does not preclude the fact that in today’s society some individuals and groups have changed this into a celebration of evil and the spiritual forces that go along with their beliefs.

My advice, for what’s its worth, is if you have children, find a church in your area that is celebrating this occasion in a health and safe manner.  Let your kids dress up in a costume that does not represent an evil force and then send them out to gather the goods.

Remember you have the final say as to what gets eaten and what does not.  If you find your favorite candy in their booty of goodies, claim it.  It’s part of your reward for looking out for their best interest.
