Super Bowl XLVII: A Tale of Two Harboughs

Super Bowl XLVII

Could you imagine being Mr. and Mrs. Harbaugh, the parents of the two opposing coaches that played the gird iron battle for Sunday’s Super Bowl XLVII? I could see Mr. Harbaugh waking up yesterday morning as the sun cracked through the horizon, turning over and saying to his wife, “If the Ravens win the Super Bowl today,  our son John is the winning coach. “  Only to have Mrs. Harbaugh reply, “Yes…but if the 49ers win, our son Jimmy is the winning coach.”  Then out of the spirit of that rare “win-win” situation, they raised opposing palms and gave each other a “high-five” as they rolled out of bed.

Well this year’s pinnacle football game was no disappointment.  If you are a 49’s fan, you had to love the way they forged a comeback after the 34 minute black- out occurred.  If you are a Raven’s fan…nothing more needs to be said except, “Congratulations!”

As a winner or a loser based on the events of yesterday’s outcome, we need to thank Mr. and Mrs. Harbaugh for doing their part in producing two Super Bowl coaches that entertained a nation.  I think maybe both the Harbaughs and the Mannings should all get together on the sands of the Hawaiian Islands, take a deep breath, thank God for their blessings, and then have a beach scrimmage to determine who really rules the Lombardy Trophy.

If you read Friday’s blog, Super Bowl Madness, then you know I was hoping that the losing quarterback from Super Bowl XLVI would acknowledge the winning quarterback for all to see.  I saw the two coaches acknowledge each other’s accomplishments in the center of the field, but as of this writing…no Tom Brady.  No handshake between Tom and Eli, no one-arm man hug, not even the “atta-boy” fanny pat in passing…nothing, very disappointing.  Maybe I should have made my commercial after all, it couldn’t have hurt.

Don’t get me wrong.  Tom Brady is a great quarterback, he just needs to learn how to show good “sportsman-like” conduct.  He has a whole generation of “up and coming” football players, which include the little guys in Pop Warner to the  high school hopefuls, watching and learning.  It would be nice if they could watch and learn how to play the game as well as how to act like a professional.

The good news is that the game was awesome!  Whether your team won or lost, it was a great game and lived up to its billing.  Some of the commercials were pretty funny, but I found myself more interested in the entertainment value rather then the product being sold.  As far as the half-time show goes…well…at least there were no wardrobe malfunctions.

Football Playoffs

Ah…the playoffs are here.  If you have to ask, “What playoffs?”  Then today’s blog is probably not going to interest you.  I’m talking about that gridiron competition that combines polished athleticism with “in your face” primordial aggression. I’m talking…professional football, where strategy and tactics play as big of a role in achieving victory as payrolls and benefit packages.

This is the time of year when even the spouses allow us to yell and jump around the flat screen televisions as though we truly had something at stake.  What they don’t understand is we do.  We pick a team at the beginning of every season and then we stand by that team at all costs.  Sure we may complain about them now and then, we definitely know we could coach better then the knucklehead on the field, if we could only get the chance, but more importantly our personal reputation is on the line.  So yes, we do have something at stake.

Then there are those of us who are truly blessed.  We have wives or girlfriends who are as every bit interested in the game as we are and there is no “catch”.  They are not just pretending to like the sport in order to get us to go shopping with them at a later date.  They truly love the game and know just as much about the stats as anyone else in the room.  So for all you football fans out there all I can say is, “Good luck, enjoy the food tray, and see you at the Super Bowl…”

Tim Tebow

I know it seems kind of cheesy for me to be jumping in on the Tim Tebow phenomenon, but I have to admit that this young quarterback for the Denver Broncos is truly stirring an interest.  I was having a conversation the other day with a friend who does not follow football but knew all about Tebow’s accomplishments both on and off the field.  When a person generates that type of a following I would have to agree that this young man has created a phenomenon.

When one listens to the “experts” you get the feeling that even they are not certain what to make of this new potential “up and comer”.  One expert will say he is a “flash in the pan” because he can’t sustain being a quality quarterback for four quarters.  Another expert will say anyone that can put together a winning streak that includes 7 out of 8 games in the NFL is not to be taken lightly.

Whether he is or is not the next John Elway is yet to be known.  What is known is this young man has given credit to God with every opportunity and win or lose he is making a positive impact in people’s lives.  I’m surmising here at the end of my blog, but Tebow’s winning streak and star power will come to an end, maybe even at the hands of the New England Patriots this weekend.  However, one thing that will remain constant is God.  With or without Tim, God remains the same yesterday, today, and forever…
