Sylvania Welcomes You

I have to be honest, when I read the sign “Sylvania Welcomes You”; I had doubts about the scripture they posted directly underneath.  It seems this little town known, as Sylvania, Alabama believes Ephesians Chapter 4, Verse 5 reflects the town sentiment.  The scripture reads, “One Lord, one faith, one baptism.”  My first thought was they must have summarized the true scripture, that is too simplified…wrong.

That is exactly the way the scripture reads when I researched it from a New American Standard Bible.  Don’t you just love the way the Lord keeps things easy for us to understand?  So often we try to complicate the simple message of salvation.  We try to make it a journey of acts, works and goals.  When in reality, it is a message of grace.

Acts, works and goals are good, but not if we are attempting to use them as a means to earn our way into the hands of grace…God’s gift of grace is free.  We don’t have to complicate it.  We just need to accept it for its true meaning.  Thank you Sylvania, Alabama and thank you Acting Mayor Max Turner for the reminder.

Higher Education

The pursuit of knowledge is a commendable goal.  Achieving a certification or degree will teach you discipline, time management, and organizational skills that you can use throughout your life.  It will teach you to plan your objectives in order to meet your goals.  However, there is a vast difference between knowledge and wisdom.

Knowledge knows that the big white fluffy polar bear behind the cage at the zoo could be dangerous.  Knowledge knows that this type of bear has been known to eat people.  Wisdom will tell you, “Don’t put your hand through the small opening in the fence.”

So by all means, pursue your educational goals and increase your knowledge.  I am grateful that I was encouraged to do so.  But remember that knowledge is not the cure-all or solve-all in life.  It is a piece of the puzzle that fits neatly into the grand scheme of things.
