Graduation = No Prayer

Graduation-No Prayer

It’s that time of year again as students who have spent the last 12 years of their life prepare to transition from high school into “the real world”.   Caps, gowns, graduation practice and rehearsals…the official banning of anything Christian…wait what?  It seems every year during the graduation season, organizations such as Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) seek-out schools, that are struggling financially, and threaten to take them to court if they allow prayer or religious songs during the high school graduation ceremony.

In fact, a Georgia school district has fallen victim to the efforts of FFRF.  The school district will no longer allow prayers or songs with religious references at graduation ceremonies after a Wisconsin group threatened to file a lawsuit and suggested that forcing non-Christian students to listen to religious music was a form of bullying.

“Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Him, ‘Teacher, rebuke Your disciples. But Jesus answered, ‘I tell you, if these become silent, the stones will cry out!’” (Luke 19:39-40)

The Conundrum

The Conundrum

Worldwide hatred for Christianity continues to exist and I am not sure why.  Christianity is the only religion where the one that is worshiped is the one who made the sacrifice for the believers and not the other way around.  To top it off, He made this sacrifice because of His love for everyone.  Still outright anger is stirred in people when the name of Jesus is mentioned.

As an example, in Zanzibar, Tanzania a Tanzanian police official says a woman died and 44 people were seriously injured when a bomb exploded in a Roman Catholic Church in northern Tanzania.  The bombing occurred in the Arusha church just before mass.  Eyewitnesses report that the bomb was thrown from a motorcycle into the church.

Jesus addressed this conundrum in John Chapter 18, Verses 17-18 when He said, “This I command you, that you love one another.  If the world hates you, you know that it has hated Me before it hated you.”

Victoria Secret Angel Rediscovers God

Victoria Secret Angel Rediscovers God

A former Victoria Secret Angel, Kylie Bisutti, gave up her career as a model in order to get back on track with God.  Ms. Bisutti won a contest in 2009 that was run by the lingerie dynasty Victoria Secret .  Since then, she had been posing for magazines and catalogues, and touring the country to promote the brand.  Last year, however, she made headlines when she decided to quit the profession altogether, citing dedication to her husband, her faith, and her realization that she didn’t want to use her body to promote sex.  It was during a sexy shoot for a magazine when she decided it was time to quit:

“That’s when it hit me. I was being paid to strip down and pose provocatively to titillate men. It wasn’t about modeling clothes anymore; I felt like a piece of meat. The next day, I broke down and started sobbing. I was in my bedroom and dropped to my knees and started to pray. ‘God, why did you have me win the Victoria’s Secret Angel competition if it was going to make me feel this way? I’m not honoring my husband. I just want answers!’ That was two years ago. Today, I’m living in Montana with my husband, enjoying the fresh air and volunteering with our church.”

It is an amazing thing to witness when the God of All Creation changes a person’s heart.  I have heard time and time again, “You can’t change a leopard’s spots.”  My response to that statement is usually, “I agree, but through Christ Jesus anything is possible.  I mean, God made the leopard, if He wants to change his spots, He can.  So if God chooses to change a person’s path by changing their heart first, He can do that too.”

History Channel’s “The Bible” Sets Records

History Channel's The Bible Sets Records

History Channel’s epic mini-series “The Bible” did a commendable job of depicting the history of the Bible from beginning to end.   The viewers were able to see these unforgettable stories, shared for generations, unfold before their very eyes through live action and cutting-edge computer-generated imagery.  I believe there was value in the way the producers Mark Burnett and Roma Downey offered new insight into famous scenes and iconic characters.

I have not decided if the soon to be released DVD series is worth owning, however, I would recommend renting the series which should be available April 2ndThe most significant segments in my mind included Noah’s journey in the ark, the Exodus, the way the angels were depicted, and the life of Jesus.

I have a sign that hangs in my office that shows a baseball player attempting to steal a base.  The picture leaves you wondering if he is successful or not.  The message underneath reads, “Sometimes the greatest risk…is not to risk”.  The History Channel along with Mark Burnett and Roma Downey took a risk, they stepped out in faith, and they let God do the rest.  Excellent lesson for us all to learn.

Good Friday: All Hope Is Not Lost

If you noticed, I did not title today’s blog in the usual fashion.  I purposely left the word “Feel” out of the “Feel Good Friday” message.  I did this because I’m surmising on this day approximately 2,000 years ago, not many people could “feel” anything.  Systemic shock was more than likely the reaction that day, at least among those who had placed all their hope in Jesus to be the King of their nation.   Then when the Roman government put Him to death, no doubt their hopes for being led by the Savior prophesied in Genesis, Isaiah, Zechariah, and Psalms died with Him on the cross.

So if the One whom others had placed all their hope was crucified on this day, why call it “Good Friday”?  Because the story does not end there, we find out three days later this was only the beginning.  We discover over 500 eyewitnesses saw Jesus return to life after dozens had witnessed his death:

“For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that He appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. After that He appeared to more than five hundred brethren at one time…” (I Corinthians 15:3-7)

Curious what the last 12 hours of Jesus’ life was like on earth?  I recommend you watch the 2004 release of “The Passion of the Christ” starring Jim Caviezel.  Be forewarned, this is not a “popcorn” eating type of movie…but when you realize He endured the last 12 hours of His life because He loves you…it will explain why this day is considered to be “Good Friday”.

Happy Easter…He has risen :)

6 Trivia Questions for Easter

6 Easter Trivia Questions

We went to the movie theater not too long ago and discovered we had arrived a little early.   To keep us entertained until the movie started, a series of trivia questions began to show up on the movie screen.  After answering a couple of the questions correctly I began to realize I certainly knew a lot of useless information, but then it got interesting.  I found myself eagerly waiting for the answers to those questions I did not know.  That’s when it hit me.  Why not have the “down time” in a movie theater ask questions that would actually enhance our knowledge?  What if they offered world history, U.S. history…wait…what about Bible knowledge.  To get us prepared for Easter this Sunday, how about I ask six questions that will test your Bible knowledge?

  • To whom did Jesus say these words, “Assuredly I say to you, one of you will betray me?”
  • Which of the twelve disciples agreed to help the plotters capture Jesus and how much was he paid?
  • What was the sign given between the betrayer and the multitude, to identify Jesus as the one that they were looking for?
  • The governor found no fault in Jesus and said, “I am innocent of this just man’s blood!”  What did he then do, to prove that he meant what he said?
  • After sentencing Jesus, He was scourged and a crown of thorns was placed on His head.  He was then spat upon and mocked.  What did they do to Him next?
  • What was the purpose for Christ’s death?

Answers:

  • The 12 disciples = Matthew 26:20-23
  • Judas Iscariot with 30 pieces of silver = Matthew 26:14-15
  • A kiss = Matthew 26:48
  • He washed his hands = Matthew 27:22-25
  • They led Him away to be crucified = Matthew 27:27-31
  • Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures = 1Corinthians 15:3

Where Are You Going This Sunday?

Where Are You Going This Sunday

I hesitate to use all of the statistics in the blog below because reading numbers can cause complacency.  Maybe it will help if you realize that every one of those numbers include individual Christians, people like you and me, our families, and friends…they are sacrificing everything to worship Jesus Christ.

Christians and human rights advocates are alarmed over an aggressive crackdown on house churches in China, where the faithful are forced to call their gatherings “patriotic” assemblies or be sent to prison where they can face torture.

Cases of the government persecuting Christians rose 42 percent last year, amid a three-phase plan by Beijing to eradicate the home-based churches, according to China Aid, a Texas-based human rights group. Experts say the Communist Party in China has long felt threatened by any movement that galvanizes a large sector of the population, fearing it could wield political clout. But the nation has become more systematically hostile to worshippers, according to Bob Fu, China Aid founder and president.

It is being reported that at least 132 cases of persecution affecting 4,919 Christians, including 442 church leaders, were reported last year, up from 93 cases and 4,322 Christians in 2011.  A total of 62 cases, the highest countrywide, were reported in Beijing according to the report, affecting 934 Christians, followed by 11 cases in Xinjiang in northwest China that affected 382 Christians.

Mr. Fu said the systematic targeting of the estimated 80 million Christians living in China has become commonplace.  Fu also indicated there have been new tactics of persecution such as the government using a wide array of subtle tactics to persecute Christians, targeting house church leaders, and churches in urban areas.  The new tactics include using utility companies, service committees, and neighborhood committees to terminate contracts with rental facilities and cut off electricity and water to the churches.

It puts things in perspective for us here in the U.S., doesn’t it?  So…where are you going this Sunday?

How To Double Your Investment

Would you like to know how to double your investment?  By giving my first book, Donovan’s Law, as a Christmas gift this year you will not only be purchasing a futuristic thriller which includes the salvation message of Jesus Christ, but the royalties from the book go to help short-term mission teams spread the gospel to the farthest reaches of the globe.  Talk about a sure way to double your investment.

Here is the bonus.  Christainbook.com has reduced the price for Donovan’s Law by 41% just in time for Christmas.  The price for Donovan’s Law went from $16.95 to $9.99 at Christianbook.com.  So to honor their decision I am asking that we do a Christianbook.com “Blitz Day”.  Which day you may ask?  “BLACK FRIDAY!”   I cannot think of a better way to turn this Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, from “Black Friday” to “Double Your Investment Friday” (Ok maybe it doesn’t have the same ring but it is for a good cause).  Plus, with the release of the sequel Soul Survivor just around the corner, now would be a great time to introduce someone to the series.

Please mark your calendars for this Friday November 23rd as “Double Your Investment” Friday and purchase Donovan’s Law from Christianbook.com.  Thank you in advance :)

Ashley Beckford: Go With The Flow

Hello…I’m Ashley Beckford.  This past October, I got the amazing opportunity to go on a mission’s trip to Africa; specifically to Zimbabwe and South Africa to lead worship for women’s conferences. I absolutely loved my small team of seven, and surprisingly, we all got along so well. You would think that seven women, moving and breathing and living together for three weeks would be a disaster… cat fights and all. But despite our very different personalities, we developed a love for each other.

It was so apparent that each person on the team was divinely appointed. While I led worship for the events, the other ladies gave their testimony or shared God’s word through a message. Every event was different, and every audience was unique. We went from doing a conference under a grass hut in the middle of nowhere to a nice church with sound, lighting, and video. We went from having our messages translated to not needing translation; poverty to riches; lively and charismatic worship to conservative and inward worship. The list goes on. The diversity in our events was a blessing and a challenge. It was wonderful to experience so many different cultures and ways of life, but challenging because we were never quite acclimated to one place. We had to “read” the crowd in a moment, and our theme became “go with the flow”.

Our conferences and events focused on the topic of brokenness. It was really intriguing to experience the brokenness in Africa. Not only was there an abundance of it, but their brokenness was very similar to the brokenness in America. The ladies we ministered to were going through the same issues we go through… relationship and marriage issues, money and job issues, health and infertility issues, etc.  I discovered brokenness is universal.

Despite our initial fear of American women not relating to the women of Africa, every song, testimony, and personal hardship fit right into their world. We visited many broken and hopeless places, but surprisingly the people were so joyful. In fact, I have never experienced people so full of joy like I did in Africa. It really challenged me and forced me to ask some hard questions. Why don’t I have joy like they do? How can they be so happy when they live under such impoverished conditions?

After much processing, I realized that their lack of distractions and material things made it easier to keep their eyes on their true joy: JESUS. Jesus was all they had. Jesus was the one they looked forward to. Jesus was the beginning and end of their day. Jesus was all they needed and Jesus was the source of their joy. I was so inspired by this joy and have since been challenged to fix my eyes on Jesus despite all of the distractions and material things we have here in America.  The Africans looked at us as rich Americans, but they were the rich ones.

It was such a blessing to go on this trip.  Despite the actual effort it took to get there (raising money and many hours of travel), I would do it again in a heartbeat. I am so thankful for what I learned and I will never forget the people and experiences. I went there to bless others, but ultimately, I am the one that was blessed. My eyes are much wider and my heart much bigger.

Thank you Ashley!  Please check out Ashley’s blog at ashleybeckford.wordpress.com

Dinosaurs, Plants, and People

It is interesting to me that science has evolved to the point that we can determine when and where dinosaurs, plants, and people have died.  I just read an article that indicated, based on textual and geological clues, along with astronomical data, and considering the Gregorian calendar, that we can determine that Jesus was crucified on Friday April 3, 33 A.D. This finding was discovered by geophysical geologist Jefferson Williams and the German Research Center for Geosciences researchers Markus Schwab and Achim Brauer, during their studies regarding earthquakes around the time Jesus Christ was crucified.

What I find more interesting is the article does not address “if” He was crucified or even “if” He was born.  I guess we have moved past those quandaries and have agreed both of those events took place.  Now we are looking at “when” He was crucified.  Since that question seems to have been answered, I guess there is only one piece of the puzzle left to solve. Did Jesus truly resurrect?

Well, I don’t know that there will ever be scientific evidence of this occurring, however, there is the fact that the Bible has been found to be a sound historical reference.  So if that is the case, then here is a piece of information to help you along your spiritual journey:

“For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that He appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. After that He appeared to more than five hundred brethren at one time, most of whom remain until now, but some have fallen asleep;” (1Cornithians 15:3-6)
