Pray for the Warren Family

Pray for the Warren Family

I know most of you heard the tragic news about the 27-year-old son of popular evangelical pastor Rick Warren.  If you have not, then you should know his son passed away at his Southern California home this past Friday evening.  Pastor Warren remarked about his son Matthew, “He had a brilliant intellect and a gift for sensing who was most in pain or most uncomfortable in a room. He’d then make a bee-line to that person to engage and encourage them.”

I share this news because my heart truly weeps for parents who lose their children.  Rick and his wife Kay are going to need our prayers long after the memorial service, so please join me in adding them to your prayer list.

Feel Good Friday: Headlines Make News

Headlines Make News

Ever heard of a “double entendre”? A “double entendre” is a figure of speech in which a spoken phrase is devised to be understood in either of two ways. Typically one of the interpretations is rather obvious whereas the other is more subtle. The more subtle of the interpretations can usually have a humorous undertone.  Below are 10 examples of true headline news articles where the editors, thank goodness, must have missed the lesson about the “double entendre” in college:

  • Hospitals are Sued by 7 Foot Doctors
  • Miners Refuse to Work after Death
  • Police Begin Campaign to Run Down Jaywalkers
  • Iraqi Head Seeks Arms
  • If Strike isn’t Settled Quickly, It May Last a While
  • Astronaut Takes Blame for Gas in Spacecraft
  • War Dims Hope for Peace
  • Burglar Steals Clock, Faces Time
  • Local High School Dropouts Cut in Half
  • Chef Throws His Heart into Helping Feed Needy

Now go back and read today’s blog title.  Get it?   “Headlines Make News”.  Of course headlines make news, but today, it’s the headlines that make the news.  Get it?

Enjoy Your Weekend :)

Egypt’s Historical Repetition

Historical Repetition

There is a saying, “Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.”  Egypt may want to sit up and listen this time around.  Their biblical past is filled with losing battles against God and now it appears the current government may be moving down the same destructive path as their ancestors.

The book of Exodus in the Bible provides the documentation of what occurred the last time Egypt took such a staunch stand against God.  Those events are now known as the “Ten Plagues of the Bible”.  Here is why I am concerned for the people of Egypt and the Christians among them:

  • A group of Christian priests from a local Coptic church in Egypt were told to convert to Islam or face death, according to an Arabic news site.
  • Extremists, a couple weekends ago, set fire to a Christian Church in the Province of Fayoum, the second such assault against the town’s Coptic population in a month. The attackers ripped down the church’s cross and hurled rocks at church members, injuring four people including the priest, according to a report by Morning Star News.
  • Two women in traditional Islamic headdress cut off the hair of two Christian women on the subway in Cairo in December, the Egypt Independent reported. It was the third such incident in two months.
  • A couple weeks back, an Egyptian court forced two Coptic Christian boys, ages 10 and 9, to face trial for “insulting the Koran,” according to reports. The boys were arrested after playing in a pile of trash, which authorities claimed included pages of the Koran.

Pray for the people of Egypt.  Pray they are willing to allow God to turn their hearts before He is forced to turn their land…again.

Al Qaeda and The Middle East

Pay Attention To The Middle East

Have you ever heard of a country called Mali?  If you have not, I think that is about to change.  Mali is a land locked country in North Africa.  Al Qaeda extremist have taken over the northern portion of this area and have now claimed it to be their country.  Here is what Fox News is reporting:

“Deep inside caves, in remote desert bases, in the escarpments and cliff faces of northern Mali, Islamic extremist fighters have been burrowing into the earth, erecting a formidable set of defenses to protect what has essentially become Al Qaeda’s new country.

“They have used the bulldozers, earth movers and Caterpillar machines left behind by fleeing construction crews to dig what residents and local officials describe as an elaborate network of tunnels, trenches, shafts and ramparts. In just one case, inside a cave large enough to drive trucks into, they have stored up to 100 drums of gasoline, guaranteeing their fuel supply in the face of a foreign intervention, according to experts.

“…On Friday, France deployed 550 troops and launched air strikes against the Islamists in northern Mali, starting battle in what is currently the biggest territory in the world held by Al Qaeda and its allies. But the fighting has been harder than expected, and the extremists boast it will be worse than the decade-old struggle in Afghanistan.

“ ‘Al Qaeda never owned Afghanistan,’ said former United Nations diplomat Robert Fowler, a Canadian kidnapped and held for 130 days by Al Qaeda’s local chapter, whose fighters now control the main cities in the north. ‘They do own northern Mali.’ “

I believe Matthew Chapter 16, Verses 2-3 may be the appropriate scripture for this event:

“But He replied to them, ‘When it is evening, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.’ And in the morning, ‘There will be a storm today, for the sky is red and threatening.’ Do you know how to discern the appearance of the sky, but cannot discern the signs of the times?’”

Feel Good Friday: Good Morning World!

Good morning world!  I know it’s early and the final results will not be known until midnight tonight, but it looks like the Mayans may have been a few mathematical equations off from predicting the “Apocalypse”.  Hopefully the news that we are still around is good enough news for this edition of “Feel Good Friday”.  If not, maybe the attached picture will help a little…

 Enjoy Your Weekend :)

The World of Blogging

Exactly one year and two days ago on September 26, 2011, I entered into the world of blogging…and what a world it is.   I have been blogging consistently every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday without fail.  I started out blogging about whatever came to mind.  Then I decided instead of writing all “willy-nilly” about whatever random topic happened to cross my path, I should pick a theme.

After much prayer and consideration, I decided to have a theme that coincides well with the topics that motivated me to write books. Those two topics were current events and biblical prophecies, thus birthed my website now known as “Global News and Biblical Views.”

With all that said, I am now going to take a three week sabbatical from the current blog atmosphere and provide you with something a little different.  Over the next three weeks instead of reading “Global News and Biblical Views”, you will be reading encouraging words that I hope will cause you to contemplate, deliberate, and meditate.

God willing I will be back in full swing starting Monday October 22nd…unless the rapture occurs.  At that point my office will look a lot like the attached picture :)

George Orwell’s Book: 1984

Today’s blog has nothing to do with George Orwell’s book entitled 1984.  However, the title of today’s blog may answer a question that could develop as you read.  Today’s blog has everything to do with the greatest bit of news to come down the pike since storks began delivering babies.  Today we celebrate the annual birthday of my first born…not to be confused with my youngest daughter’s birthday which I blogged about on July 30th

No sir…this one was the first out of the gate, the trailblazer.  The one who benefitted from being raised by a loving mom and a dad, even though the dad had no idea what the difference was between a claw-clip and a scrunchie or the fact that the words chartreus and magenta were actually names of colors (I thought they were green and pink).

Despite my short-comings, she turned out to be a wonderful young woman (credit goes to my wife) and a terrific friend.  Below is a list of significant events that occurred on or around her birthday (see how I left out the year she was born?):

  • Apple Macintosh is introduced to the world.
  • Summer Olympics are held in Los Angeles.
  • Space Shuttle Discovery launches on its first mission.
  • President Ronald Reagan is re-elected to his second term in office.
  • Christin (maiden name-Mayhew) is born.

Happy birthday to everyone born on September 17th, especially to Christin…

HAPPY BIRTHDAY SKEETER!

A Birthday Wish

Today I am going to venture off my normal beaten path of Headline News with Biblical Views for a more personal blog.  Today marks my youngest daughter’s birthday.  Because I understand the sensitivity of revealing a woman’s age, I will not go down that path, for self-preservation reasons if nothing else.  However, I would like to share with you what my research has taught me about birthdays:

Two sisters, Mildred and Patty Hill in 1893, composed the song “Happy Birthday to You”.  The song was released under the title “Good Morning to You” but was met with very little success.  It was not until the title was changed to “Happy Birthday to You” that the once mundane tune made it’s way into virtually every household across the globe…at least once a year.

Famous people born on July 30th:

  •  Henry Ford
  •  Arnold Schwarzenegger
  •  Lisa Kudrow
  •  Hilary Swank
  •  Justine Mayhew

Happy Birthday to everyone born on July 30th…especially my favorite youngest daughter!!

A Special Invitation

WJCL News, an affiliate of ABC News, recently received a special invitation.  Emma Lee and Noah Eastman, a couple of second graders living near Savannah, Georgia dropped by the news station and handed them a personal invitation to a lemonade sale being held this Saturday, May 10th, at Savannah Christian school.  That act alone would have been enough for me to want to blog about it on several levels, but there is more.

The event is known as the Alex Lemonade Stand Fundraiser.  It seems Alex was a little girl with cancer who used to hold lemonade sales to raise money for other little children suffering from the disease.  I don’t know about you, but when I hear or read about some of the amazing stories our children do for others, it makes me sit down and re-evaluate my priorities.  It also helps me to see why Jesus had such a soft heart for the little children.

“But Jesus said, ‘Let the children alone, and do not hinder them from coming to Me; for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.’”  (Matthew 19:14)

“Truly I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it at all.”  (Luke 18:17)

When someone from the newsroom asked the two solicitors how they could find the lemonade stand…Noah told her to follow the signs.

Future Predictions

Photo provided by Vjeran Lisjak

About a year ago I read an article on the web from moneycentral.msn that caused me to sit up and take notice.  You see, I wrote Donovan’s Law about four years ago so when articles like the one below make the news, I wonder if Donovan’s Law is really that far into the future.

“An implantable chip (in your hand) could allow you to charge purchases or even start your car. It’d be convenient, to be sure. But would it be too creepy?  It’s a simple concept, really: You inject a miniature radio frequency identifier the size of a grain of rice between your thumb and forefinger and, with a wave of your hand, unlock doors, turn on lights, start your car or pay for your drinks at an ultrachic nightspot.

“The problem is, the whole concept is a little geeky for most of us, nauseating for some, Orwellian for a few and even apocalyptic for a smattering of religious fundamentalists.  Forget the science of it — and yes, it does work remarkably well. Forget the convenience of it. Forget that similar identifying technologies, from bar codes to mag stripes, overcame similar obstacles and are now ubiquitous…it’s too icky.”

Donovan’s Law…a futuristic thriller…or…is it?
