Feel Good Friday: Livin’ On A Prayer

It’s confession time.  Have you ever belted out a tune when you thought you were alone?  Maybe in your car pretending you are talking on a hands-free cellular phone or in the shower where anyone can sound like Steven Tyler or Beyoncé.  How about this…Would you sing a song at a gas station if a man’s voice asked you to do so through a speaker at the gas pump panel?  Well one man did and it landed him a spot on the Tonight Show.

The Tonight Show pranksters were behind the stunt that ended up entertaining millions in an NBC studio, but the man who stepped up and sang Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ on a Prayer” in the middle of a suburban gas station, while his wife howled with laughter, had no idea it was a prank.

Then to top it off, when asked by the man in the gas pump for a duet, his wife dressed in baggy sweatpants and a bandana got out of the car and sang a pitch perfect “Sweet Dreams” by the Eurythmics.  The two-way camera mounted in the gas pump, along with cameras surrounding the car, videotaped the whole scene as the two were prompted to sing more.   Jay Leno was so impressed that he invited the couple on his show. He said it was rare to see a couple so happy together.

Enjoy Your Weekend :)

National Day of Prayer

National Day of Prayer

Tomorrow is “The National Day of Prayer”.  Allow me to encourage you to take advantage of this freedom that has existed in America since 1952.  Ever since then, “The National Day of Prayer” has been an annual event held on the first Thursday of May.  This designated day was enacted by the United States Congress when they asked all Americans “to turn to God in prayer and meditation”.  Traditionally, the President of the United States issues an official “National Day of Prayer” proclamation each year and President Obama has done so since his first day in office.

However, the constitutionality of the law that established the “National Day of Prayer” has been constantly challenged by various atheist groups such as the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF). In fact, In April 2011, a three-judge panel of a federal appellate court ruled that FFRF lacked standing, and, without addressing the law’s constitutionality, unanimously overturned a previous court’s ruling that it was unconstitutional. FFRF immediately appealed the decision.

So, once again I would like to encourage you to take advantage of this freedom that has existed in America since 1952. Find a public gathering that is offering up prayer on behalf of all Americans and pray for this “one nation under God”.

Pray for the Warren Family

Pray for the Warren Family

I know most of you heard the tragic news about the 27-year-old son of popular evangelical pastor Rick Warren.  If you have not, then you should know his son passed away at his Southern California home this past Friday evening.  Pastor Warren remarked about his son Matthew, “He had a brilliant intellect and a gift for sensing who was most in pain or most uncomfortable in a room. He’d then make a bee-line to that person to engage and encourage them.”

I share this news because my heart truly weeps for parents who lose their children.  Rick and his wife Kay are going to need our prayers long after the memorial service, so please join me in adding them to your prayer list.

Here’s the Church, Here’s the Steeple, Open the Door

Here's the Church

Do you ever struggle with getting to church?  Maybe it’s your day to sleep in and catch up on your rest.  Maybe going to church cuts into your normal weekly routine.  Maybe you stayed out too late the night before. It’s true, attending church will not make the difference whether you go to heaven or hell.  However, fellowship with other “believers” will help you stay on the course toward your Savior.  How important is fellowship? It is important enough that Christians in the Middle East would risk their freedom or even their lives to get a small taste of God in a gathering of fellow Christ followers.  Here’s what I mean:

  • Saudi Arabia’s notorious religious police, known as the Mutawa, swooped in on a private gathering of at least 53 Ethiopian Christians last month, shutting down their private prayer, and arresting the peaceful group of foreign workers for merely practicing their faith.
  • 36 Ethiopian Christians were tortured and incarcerated for their belief.
  • The Saudi Mutawa imprisoned 29 women and six men for more than seven months in barbaric prison conditions, where the men faced severe beatings and the women were subjected to sexually intrusive torture methods.
  • Last March, Abdulaziz ibn Abdullah Al al-Sheikh, the grand mufti of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, declared it is “necessary to destroy all the churches in the Arabian Peninsula.”

What do these Christians know about the value of church that Americans seem to have forgotten?  I might be able to answer that question for you since I have a little experience with the foreign mission field, but I think it would be more beneficial for you to find out for yourself.  See you Sunday :)

Max Lucado: Pray For Our Leaders

A close friend of mine brought to my attention a “cause” that is being presented by Max Lucado, the best-selling author and preacher at Oak Hills Church in San Antonio, Texas.  The “cause” is known as “40 Days of Prayer for the USA”.  The concept behind the “cause” is to pray for our nation consistently and diligently each day during the 40 days leading up to the Presidential election.

He is not asking us to pray for a Republican President or the re-election of President Obama, but rather he is asking us to pray for God’s guidance and direction for our leaders.  If you have been following the party platforms and conventions, then you know the latest scandal to hit the news was the removal of the name of “God” from the Democratic platform.  It took an upheaval to have God’s name reinstated but the upset protestors eventually won.

If you read my blog on August 24, 2012 entitled “Rick Warren Cancels Presidential Forum”, you will get the idea of how harsh this year’s presidential race has become.

So, instead of being frustrated and throwing our arms in the air, let’s listen to Max and raise our hands in prayer.  Some people live by the adage, “When all else fails…pray.”  I say, “Pray…before all else fails.”  The first website below references Max Lucado’s “40 Days of Prayer for the USA” guidelines.

Every Hour of Every Day

In keeping with the theme of “prayer” from last Friday’s blog, I found a news article about a church in Oklahoma that has attempted to keep a prayer vigil going every hour of every day, 24/7, since 2003.  The chapel at St. Joseph’s Church in the city of Norman has designated this feat as “Perpetual Adoration”.

Once again, referring to last Friday’s blog entitled “Leaving California and Heading to Colorado”, the courts may have the power to remove the National Day of Prayer throughout this great nation, but it will not stop the people from praying.  In fact, it may cause the follower’s of Christ to enter into a deeper and more meaningful prayer life.  Of course I believe it would be detrimental to the psyche of our great nation if the National Day of Prayer was removed, but I do not believe that an act like that would hinder the prayers being offered from the people of this great nation.

Luke chapter 19, verses 39 – 40 read, “Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Him, ‘Teacher, rebuke Your disciples.’  But Jesus answered, ‘I tell you, if these become silent, the stones will cry out!’”

Leaving California and Heading To Colorado

I don’t know if any of you remember this, but in the early 1990’s there was a movement of Christian organizations leaving California and heading to Colorado.  I was a little concerned at the time for two main reasons.  The first reason for my concern was the uncertainty this would create in California.  With some of the most prolific Christian organizations exiting the west, I could not help but wonder how that would affect our future here in the Golden State.  I think we know the outcome at this point.

My second concern was for the State of Colorado.  With such an influx of biblical based organizations entering their beautiful countryside, I had a feeling that a battle was about to develop.  I have read over the years some of the court cases that I believe were the result of those battles.  But it was not until I read this recent article that I realized the battle ground has truly developed. The article read:

“A Colorado court has ruled the state’s proclamation for a Day of Prayer is unconstitutional.”

Congress designated “The National Day of Prayer” to be held each year on the first Thursday of May.  However, back in 2008, an organization known as Freedom From Religion filed in the Colorado courts that this was unconstitutional.  In 2011 they lost their case but they fought the verdict and had it end up in the Colorado Court of Appeals where the latest decision was recently announced. In Ephesians Chapter 6, Verse 18, we find God has something to say on the topic of prayer:

“With all prayer and petition pray at all times in the Spirit, and with this in view, be on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saints,”

Why Did I Write A Book: The Anne M. Baxter Interview

At the request of some dear friends that don’t do Facebook….what…there are people that don’t do FB?  It’s true…anyway…at the request of some dear friends that don’t do Facebook, I have re-posted Wednesday’s interview with American Christian Fiction Writer’s Nothern Coordinator Anne M. Baxter.  To God goes the glory:

Anne: It’s my pleasure to introduce to you today a new friend, Rick Mayhew, author of Donovan’s Law, a futuristic view of what could happen if “the end” were any closer.  Hi, Rick, nice to have you onboard today. I’m in the process of reading your book, Donovan’s Law, and I’m curious what made you think about writing. Can you tell us a little about it?

Rick: It was January 2007, and we as a nation had just said our goodbyes to old Mr. 2006. Like most of you I had high hopes of what a fresh start with the New Year would bring to my family and I. It was late one evening, and I had just finished a chapter from one of the many Christian fiction books that I read over the years. I closed the book, laid my head down next to my wife, and tried to go to sleep. Being a hopeless insomniac back then, my mind began to wander. I was rehashing the storyline I had just finished reading, thinking how I would have written it slightly different than the author. That’s when it happened. Something spoke in my heart and said, “You should write a book.” I thought about it for the briefest of seconds, and then laughed at my naiveté. “How could I write a book? I have never taken a class or even read an article about what it takes to write a book.” I rolled over, closed my eyes, and repeated to myself out of disgust, “Write a book. That’s silly.”

Anne: Hm. So you totally put it out of your head. Went to sleep after telling yourself, “That’s silly.” And yet, something must have inspired you to keep going.

Rick: The next evening I remember going through the same routine. I was once again laying my head next to my wife in a futile attempt to sleep. I began thinking, “What am I going to do? I can’t sleep, and I have to work in the morning. I need to sleep.” But the harder I tried to convince myself to sleep, the more awake I became. Then I felt that gentle nudge again, “Write a book.” Out of shear frustration, I rose from my bed and went into my office and sat at my desk. I gazed over the computer screen and said, “Okay, what do I write about?” Then it came to me. Write about something you know. Write about a firefighter who can’t sleep. And so the first page of my book, Donovan’s Law, begins with a firefighter on duty at the fire station and his attempt to sleep. The book was born.

Anne: Yes, yes, and then what?

Rick: For the next year, I placed on paper the events of the book as they unfolded within my mind. I wrote the book as though I was watching a movie. I did not know what the storyline was going to be or who or what the characters were going to do until I would sit down each night and begin their journey. Ultimately when I finished, I had 235 pages lying on my desk beckoning me, “Now what do we do?” Once again, I had no contacts or experience in getting a book published so I prayed for guidance.

Anne: What did you get in the way of guidance?

Rick: I decided to e-mail Focus on the Family because I had been a supporter of their ministry for years. I asked them for advice as to how one would go about getting published and if they would be interested in reviewing my manuscript. I received a very polite e-mail saying they did not publish fiction novels for now, but thanked me for considering them. Well, I figured that must be my answer. So I placed the novel on a shelf and walked away for three months.

Anne: Three months! Wow, how could you stand it?

Rick: Not well, I’m afraid. Night after night, I kept getting the urge to pursue this endeavor. I soon came to realize I could not give up so easily. Finally, I decided to e-mail them again. This time I received an answer suggesting I submit to a website known as Writer’s Edge. It turned out that Writer’s Edge is a company that looks over new author manuscripts and decides if there is a chance for publishing. If they give a writer the nod, then they will post your manuscript along with hundreds of others on their site. Publishers looking for something new and different visit this site.

Anne: I’ve heard a little about Writer’s Edge. What happened then?

Rick: I was only posted for about three weeks when I received an e-mail from what is now known as OakTara Publishing. The publishing agent asked if I had signed a contract yet with any publisher. When I told them “no” he said my manuscript was exactly the type of book they were looking for in a new author. Donovan’s Law, a futuristic thriller based on today’s headlines, was published in August of 2011 and is now available in paperback and e-versions through Amazon.com, Christianbook.com, and any Christian bookstore that carries Lifeway Christian Store products. In addition, OakTara Publishers stated they would be interested in a sequel. God is truly amazing!

Pretending God Does Not Exist

Pretending God does not exist does not mean that He does not exist.  “Unblessing” a highway does not mean the highway is no longer blessed, although some atheists in Florida may disagree.  An organization known as “Polk Under Prayer” asked God to bless the highway leading into Polk County, Florida.  Over the past weekend, a group of atheists known as “Humanists of Florida” arrived at this same highway with a mop, a broom, and water to symbolize the “unblessing” of the highway.

In their opinion, blessing the highway sent the wrong message to visitors who are not Christians.  They believe by “unblessing” the highway they are saying everyone is welcome.  Is it just me or does anyone else find it amusing that if these atheists do not believe in God, then what are they unblessing?

“The eyes of the Lord are in every place, watching the evil and the good.” (Proverbs 15:3)

Prayer Changes Things

Last Saturday on Facebook I posted a tid-bit of information regarding the sequel to Donovan’s Law, which I am currently writing.  Along with that posting, I included the fact that I am still amazed, after over 30 years of being a follower of Jesus Christ, that prayer changes things.  I don’t know why I am still amazed.  One would think that I would understand the fact that God not only hears our prayers, but also answers them.

I guess I have a hard time with this concept when I dwell on the fact that the Creator of the Universe has time to hear my silly personal prayer.  Here is the amazing part; He does not think it is silly at all.  In fact, He wants to hear from us.

My wife and I provide pre-marital counseling to couples preparing to enter into the sacred union of marriage.  One of the topics we spend the most time discussing is communication.  We emphasize the fact that a key element in having a healthy relationship is good communication.  So if it is true for us, and we have been designed in the image of God, why would it be any different with the Maker of Heaven and Earth?  So I say it again, prayer changes things…
